EMANUELE CONFORTIN

Emanuele Confortin is an Italian freelance journalist, photojournalist and documentarist. He has a Master’s Degree in Oriental Languages and Civilizations with a specialization on Central Asia and Indian Subcontinent studies: languages (Hindi and Urdu), social environment, political background, history, religion and social dynamics.

Since 1998 he works between Europe, South Asia and (2008) Middle East. He focuses on conflicts, climate change, geopolitics, migrations and threatened minorities on the fringe of modern society.  He is author of written reportage and analysis, long term projects, documentary films and photo-exhibitions. Most of his field-works have been conducted in high and low intensity war scenarios, as well as in the context of migrations and social change. In over almost 20 years on the field, he worked to China, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Greece, Israel, Fyrom, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, France, Italy. His works are published in newspaper, magazines and radios, as well as discussed during dedicated conferences.

Between March 2017 and January 2018, he has developed “Back to Life in Iraq”, a long-term project focused on resilience of Mr. Matti al-Kanun, a Christian-Syriac artist from Iraq, struggling to start with a new life with his family after the end of the Battle for Mosul. “Back to Life in Iraq” becomes a reportage and an exhibition including pictures, a documentary film and the paintings “saved” by Mr. Al Kanun from ISIS in the Iraqi city of Bartella. The exhibition held for the first time in Venice (March-April 2018).

He is author of “Dentro l’esodo, migranti sulla via europea” Antigaedizioni, 2017 (isbn. 978-88-99657-71-0) a book enclosing 14 months of fieldwork along migration routes in Pakistan, Turkey, Aegean sea, Greece and Balkans.

As co-author, he has published an article in the scientific monographic work “Mostri, spettri e demoni dell’Himalaya” Meti Edizioni, 2016 (isbn. 978- 88-6484-022-2), focused on an long term fieldwork conducted in Kinnaur, a tribal district of Himachal Pradesh, Indian Himalaya. 

In 2003, 2005, 2018 and 2019 he had the opportunity of working in Kinnaur, a tribal district of Himachal Pradesh (Indian Himalaya). From this long term project he wrote a book “Kinnaur Himalaya, al confine tra ordine e caos” (April 2019) and a documentary-film “Kinnaur Himalaya” (February 2020).    

Founder of Indika.it, one of the most influential Italian websites focused on Indian Subcontinent issues. During free-time he practice climbing and alpinism, with a dedicated articles productions for specialist magazines. He is co-founder of Alpinismi.com, online magazine focused on mountains and alpinism.
